One year ago at this time, if we were to tell you that Jeffery was going to be a smiling, joking ODC service participant capable of completing multiple-step work tasks, you would have thought we were speaking of someone else. Yet, this is exactly who Jeffrey has become over the last year of his training at ODC.
Jeffery has been working with ODC in Wisconsin Rapids for 13 years, as part of our Beginnings service. Beginnings provides support, training and guidance that assists people with more significant challenges adjust to a social environment. We provide the assistance needed for individuals to be as independent as possible while having their personal care, behavioral support and mobility needs met.
Jeffrey’s struggles in past years were, at times, heartbreaking. What is most amazing is that, after countless struggles with behavioral and social issues, all of the work that he and his ODC staff supports have done is coming to fruition. Today, Jeffrey routinely trains on the general work floor, working his entire shift, taking breaks and lunches with his coworkers, and laughing and smiling at their interactions and stories. Jeffery still struggles with job completion but for him, the journey was never about how fast he could work or how much he could do. His journey was about the person he could become.
Jeffrey has begun to give us a peak into who he really is. We all know that this is just the beginning of a new chapter in his life… and that’s pretty awesome.
Congratulations, Jeffrey, on your nomination for ODC’s 2017 Personal Achievement Award!
