Working at a library was Katie’s dream job. But when given that opportunity, Katie almost succumbed to the pressure of her fears and barriers.
That was five years ago. Thankfully, the Marshfield Public Library was focused on her skills and the potential that she didn’t see in herself. They hired her as a library page in 2011 and since then, Katie has flourished. Provided with growth opportunities, she now serves as a mentor and trainer for new pages, and has increased responsibilities at the circulation desk.
Although life is always challenging, and old and new barriers continue to emerge, Katie now has the quiet strength to overcome them. She is a spokesperson and advocate against sexual abuse, and is part of an organization that advocates for people with mental health issues. The anxiety that has been so debilitating to her for years is now empowering her to help others.
Katie recognized every opportunity and used the tools provided to her to make her life better. Now, she is passionate about her job, and about making her community a better place.
Congratulations, Katie, on your nomination for ODC’s 2016 Personal Achievement Award!
