Building Inclusive Communities Through Adaptive Recreation

In every community, there are moments that remind us just how powerful connection can be. A shared laugh. A small victory on the playing field. The confidence that grows when someone realizes, “I can do this.”

In 2025, those moments multiplied across Central Wisconsin as Opportunity Development Center (ODC) expanded adaptive recreation opportunities for people of all abilities—thanks to the incredible generosity of the Community Foundation of Central Wisconsin, Aspirus Riverview Foundation, and Greenheck Foundation. Because of their support, more individuals were able to move their bodies, build friendships, and experience the simple joy of belonging.

Expanding Opportunity Across Central Wisconsin

With this funding, ODC brought inclusive recreation to more communities than ever before:

  • In Portage County, individuals came together through activities designed to spark movement, teamwork, and meaningful connection.

  • In South Wood County, programs focused on both physical strength and emotional well-being, supporting participants in body and spirit alike.

  • In Marathon County, adaptive recreation continued to grow—creating new opportunities for healthy living, confidence, and inclusion.

Behind every program is a person gaining independence. A family seeing their loved one light up. A community becoming stronger through shared experience.

Why Adaptive Recreation Matters

Adaptive recreation is about far more than exercise—it’s about dignity, belonging, and possibility.

Research consistently shows that inclusive recreational opportunities:

  • Improve physical fitness and reduce secondary health risks

  • Decrease stress, anxiety, and depression

  • Boost self-esteem, resilience, and overall mental health

But the impact doesn’t stop with individuals. When people feel connected, entire communities benefit. Strong social ties are proven to reduce loneliness, lower the risk of chronic disease, and improve overall life satisfaction (CDC; Harvard Health). Parks, green spaces, and accessible programs become gathering places where neighbors meet, friendships grow, and understanding deepens.

Adaptive sports and inclusive recreation also strengthen emotional resilience and empathy—two essential elements of truly thriving communities.

Together, We Make Inclusion Possible

Every adaptive program offered, every barrier removed, and every life touched in 2025 happened because people chose to believe in inclusion. Because of your support, individuals with disabilities were not just invited to participate—they were welcomed, celebrated, and empowered.

Together, we are building more than programs.
We are building confidence, connection, and community—for everyone.
